Accident Benefits
The Caregiver Benefit: Support when you can't be there.
3 minute read
Being a caregiver is a full-time responsibility. Whether you care for a child, an elderly parent, or a dependant adult, your role is essential to their daily life and well-being. When a motor vehicle accident makes it impossible to manage those duties, the Caregiver Benefit in your auto insurance coverage is there to step in, helping ensure your loved ones continue to receive the support they need.
This benefit provides financial assistance to hire professional help while you recover from motor vehicle accident-related injuries. It’s designed to give both you and your dependants support during a challenging time.
Coverage At a Glance
Who is eligible: People who were the primary caregiver before their motor vehicle accident and who are not receiving Income Replacement or Non-Earner Benefits.
Benefit: $250 per week for the first dependant, plus $50 per week for each additional dependant.
How Coverage Works
Auto insurance groups injuries into three categories, based on severity: minor, non-catastrophic and catastrophic. Here’s how the Caregiver Benefit applies in each case.
Minor Injuries
The Caregiver Benefit does not apply to minor injuries such as mild sprains and strains. These injuries typically heal quickly, allowing most people to return to their regular routines without the need for caregiving assistance.
Non-Catastrophic Injuries
For non-catastrophic injuries, such as broken bones or concussions, the Caregiver Benefit is only available if coverage was purchased. It helps cover professional care while you recover and gradually return to your caregiving responsibilities. For example, if you break your arm in a crash and cannot lift or assist your child with special needs, the Caregiver Benefit could help pay for professional help until you’re back on your feet.
Catastrophic Injuries
If you suffer a severe injury — for example, if you’re a stay-at-home parent hospitalized after a major motor vehicle accident — you may not be able to care for your dependants for an extended period. In that situation, this benefit pays $250 per week for your first dependant and $50 per week for each additional dependant, helping ensure your loved ones continue to receive the care they need while you focus on recovery.
Consistent Care
The Caregiver Benefit is designed to recognize the essential role caregivers play and to provide meaningful assistance when an accident prevents them from fulfilling their duties. With this support, caregivers can focus on recovery while ensuring their dependants continue to receive consistent, professional care.
